Just because you lose weight on a diet low in carbohydrates does not mean that it is a healthy diet.

A study published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine indicates a low carbohydrate diet based on animal protein increases the risk of cancer and death.

However, a diet based on vegetables low in carbohydrates can contribute to heart disease and lower mortality rates, research indicates.

CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton noted on “The Early Show”, the study did not look particularly to popular diets such as Atkins diet. Instead, he generalized between diets low in carbohydrates based animal and plant.

The research, she said, about 130,000 people watched, and found that low-carbohydrate diets containing animal protein were associated with a higher mortality rate compared to vegetable-based diets low in carbohydrates. In meat diets low in carbohydrates have been specifically linked to increased lung and colorectal cancer deaths – other studies have also confirmed that red meat and processed meats have a risk of cancer. diets of meat are often rich in saturated fat and cholesterol.

A vegetarian diet based on protein, low carbohydrate, Ashton said, including healthy fats such as olive oil and a lawyer, not gluten-free starch, soy, nuts, beans fruits and vegetables.

The study found that providing this type of system is that it may have a lower risk of heart disease. Other studies have found that low-calorie, low carbohydrate diets have improved bad cholesterol and other cardiovascular risk factors. With a diet of vegetables low in carbohydrates you consume more unsaturated fat, fiber and micronutrients such as magnesium and potassium.

Ashton added that if these schemes are low in carbohydrates, which does not mean that you completely eliminate carbohydrates. You need it, and there are those who are healthy.

Americans consume unhealthy amounts of bad carbohydrates and starchy foods, like sugar and products containing white flour, like bread. But the Institute of Medicine recommends that adults 45-65 percent of their calories from carbohydrates to provide enough energy and fuel for physical activity and good health. These diets low in carbohydrates generally advises people to consume about half the recommended amount.

Healthy Alternatives carbohydrates include whole grains such as oat fiber, high-bran cereal and brown rice, beans for protein and fiber, fruits and vegetables such as okra and eggplant. These boost your health by incorporating minerals, vitamins and fiber in your diet.

Another study finds Tuesday that consumers are often misinterpreted low-carb claims on the front of food packaging.

The study in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, has been an increase of 516 percent of food sales to low-carbohydrate 2001-2005.

What consumers and dieters need to know, “said Ashton, is that you must verify the claims of these products. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on the back of the package to see if the contents fit into the type of plan you are targeting – the packaged food is supposed to be part of an overall diet – and only because he low-carb does not mean it is low in calories. A good rule is to always look for the Nutrition Facts panel on the packaging.

Ashton said that you should consult your doctor before starting any diet, especially if you have any health problems. For example, people with a history of heart disease should probably avoid a low carb diet that focuses on meat, because of its saturated fatty acids.

You want to remember that to lose weight, you’ll probably reduce the number of calories you consume. These schemes – they are low carb or low fat – usually reduce the number of calories you take in. You also want to look for plans that are flexible in a healthy way – instead of completely restricting an type of food, to find a system that integrates a large number of food groups. This way, you’re more likely to stay with her. because it gives you more choice.

The percentage of American adults who smoke cigarettes occurs in the range of 20-21 percent since 2005, the decline in smoking has stalled, according to government figures released Tuesday.

Figures provided by the Centers for Disease Control showed the number of adult smokers declined between 2000 and 2005, but the percentage of adult smokers has remained at about 20-21 per cent since 2005.

In 2009, nearly 24 percent of men smoked, compared to 18 per cent of women. About 31 percent of people living below the poverty line smoked, the government agency.

“Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in this country,” said CDC Director Thomas Frieden.

“But progress is possible. Strong state laws that protect non-smokers against secondhand smoke, cigarette prices, aggressive advertising campaigns that show the human impact of smoking and well-funded programs to fight against Smoking decreases the number of adult smokers and save lives. ”

The CDC said passive smoking or second hand remains a problem for non-smokers, including many children.

He said 54 per cent of children aged three and 11 years were exposed to secondhand smoke, and almost all children who live with smokers have measurable levels of toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke.

The figures show the prevalence of smoking declines with education. Less than six percent of adults with graduate degrees smoke compared to more than 25 percent of adults without high school diploma.

In 2009, smoking among adults was lowest in Utah, followed by California, which had a long-running program comprehensive tobacco control and has seen a 40 percent decline in smoking from 1998 to 2006 .

Children whose parents smoke are twice as likely to smoke, but children who grow up in communities with comprehensive smoke-free laws are much less likely to become smokers, according to the CDC.

The CDC said that the federal government intensifies its efforts to reduce tobacco consumption in order to achieve smoking in 2020.

Smoking is considered a major cause of various types of cancer, heart and lung diseases, including emphysema. Exposure to secondhand smoke is a cause of sudden death syndrome infant respiratory symptoms, heart disease and lung cancer among adult non-smokers.

Apple showed off the basic integration of Facebook with its new music-based social service network ping, but this feature has disappeared shortly after the users of iTunes Ahold 10. Reason Ping users lost the ability to search for friends on Facebook may be because Facebook has chosen to block access to this feature, according AllThingsD.

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs showed off during Ping music-related media event of the company on September 1, 10 seems to iTunes include the ability to search for accounts of users of Facebook for potential friends. When Ping was actually available, however, the option to search Facebook mysteriously disappeared for few users seemed to have access.

According to Mr. Jobs, Apple and Facebook discussed the possibility of collaborating, but Apple finally left the negotiations on the “onerous conditions that we could not accept.”

Now it seems that Apple went ahead with its plan to include research in Ping Facebook friend, to be blocked once the service was launched, according to unnamed sources familiar with the matter. Once Apple realized Ping was blocked access encoders Facebooks API functionality from iTunes.

For its part, Facebook seems open to work on an agreement with Apple. “Facebook and Apple have cooperated successfully in the past to provide large social experiences and we look forward to doing so in the future,” the company said.

Since the two companies appear to have different ideas about what constitutes an acceptable agreement, it may be some time before Facebook and Apple reached agreement on a deal.
